May is Lupus Awareness Month and World Lupus Day is May 10.

World Lupus Day is celebrated in honor of the more than 5 million people living with lupus around the world.

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body such as the skin, joints and organs. African-American women are three times more likely than Caucasian women to get lupus and develop severe symptoms, with as many as 1 in every 250 affected.

May 20, is Put on Purple Day to help raise awareness for lupus. Mississippi does not have a chapter of the national Lupus Foundation, but the Heartland Chapter of St. Louis, Mo., is encouraging supporters to send individual or group photos to info@lfaheartland.org. They will post photos on their Facebook page all day during Put on Purple Day. You can also post your photos on Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #PutOnPurple or #POP. The Heartland Chapter encourages everyone to spread the word by gettingĀ  co-workers, friends and family members to join in on the Put on Purple Day.

The Mississippi Link Newspaper will have a feature story about Lupus Awareness Month and encourages anyone living with lupus, has a family member with lupus or is a caregiver for someone with lupus to share your story. Contact The Mississippi Link Intern Diamond Williams at dwill142f@yahoo.com.
