LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) – A 23-year-old Mississippi man who assaulted his ex-wife and hit a man with a bat at Fort Polk has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison.
Federal prosecutors said in a news release that Justin Corey Thurston, of McLain, Mississippi, had pleaded guilty in April to assault with a dangerous weapon.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Patricia Minaldi also sentenced Thurston to three years of supervised released.
During his guilty plea, evidence presented showed that Thurston had visited his estranged wife on the U.S. Army post in Vernon Parish to get his personal belongings. But he and the woman soon got into an altercation after she refused to give him her cellphone. It was during that altercation that Thurston hit the man in the head with a bat.
