Man dies after being restrained by police during arrest

MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) – A Mississippi man has died after police restrained him during an arrest.

WTOK-TV (http://bit.ly/1GhSqIi) reports 40-year-old Stephen Gene Davenport got in a fight with another man in Meridian early Tuesday. Police say Davenport became violent when deputies tried to arrest him. Two police officers were injured trying to break up the fight.

After being restrained, Davenport became unresponsive. He was taken to a local hospital where he died.

Davenport’s mother told the station her son was a drug user and that she isn’t angry with police, but wants answers.

Deputies were wearing body cameras during the incident. Video will be sent to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation as evidence.

Davenport’s body has been sent to Jackson for autopsy.
