Hinds County Judge LaRita Cooper Stokes underwent electrical cardioversion, a brief electric shock given to the heart, on Monday in an effort to reset her heart rhythm back to a normal, regular pattern.

Stokes was hospitalized in Houston, TX last week due to an erratic heart beat.

She did not have a heart attack or a stroke.

The procedure was successful in lowering her heart rate, however, she is under medication and will remain in the hospital for at least a few more days to ensure she is well enough to return to Jackson.

She and her husband, City Councilman Kenneth I. Stokes, were in Houston attending a conference.

The family is asking the public to pray for her and her family.  Alice Tisdale is still acting as spokesperson for the Stokes family.
