ESCATAWPA, Miss. (AP) — Authorities said an 8-year-old Escatawpa girl remained in critical condition after being shot in the throat in an apparent accidental discharge of a firearm.
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said the girl was wounded Saturday at her home.
She is being treated at the University of South Alabama Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama.
Ezell said Sunday deputies are still talking to witnesses and gathering evidence.
He said the shooting could be presented to a grand jury as a matter of concern without necessarily resulting in criminal charges.
