JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Jackson police are trying to find out who damaged a generator and two security cameras at Mississippi’s only abortion clinic.
Clinic director Shannon Brewer said Tuesday that employees of Jackson Women’s Health Organization found the vandalism when they arrived at work Monday morning.
The state requires the clinic to have a generator in case power fails, and Brewer told The Associated Press that the clinic remains open while the generator is being repaired.
“The generator looks like somebody took something and beat on it real bad and cut some of the wires on it,” Brewer said.
Officer Colendula Green, spokeswoman for the Jackson Police Department, said no suspects had been identified as of Tuesday.
Brewer said the security cameras outside the clinic, which are not required by the state, are also being replaced. She said one was pulled down and its cords were cut, and the other was bent on its support frame as if someone had tried to pull it down.
The last footage taken by the cameras shows one person walking outside the clinic in the rain after midnight Sunday, Brewer said. The person was wearing tall boots, pants and a sweatshirt with the hood pulled up.
Brewer estimated the damage to the generator and cameras at $5,000 to $10,000.
The clinic, a bright pink building in Jackson’s Fondren neighborhood, is a frequent target of protests.
