JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) — Mississippi health officials have confirmed five new cases of West Nile virus — two each Forrest and Hinds counties and one in Harrison County.
That brings the state’s total so far this year to 24 cases, including three deaths.
Numbers released Monday do not include any new deaths.
The Mississippi State Department of Health says Hinds County has had the most West Nile virus cases so far this year, with six. Forrest and Rankin counties have had four each. Adams County has had two.
Bolivar, Covington, Harrison, Lauderdale, Madison, Newton, Yazoo and Wilkinson counties have had one case each.
The deaths occurred in Forrest, Madison, and Yazoo counties.
In 2013, Mississippi had 45 West Nile virus cases, with five deaths.
