MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters say a tropical depression has formed over the Atlantic, though it remains far out to sea and is not expected to threaten land.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says the depression formed Monday afternoon. It was about 1,200 miles (1,930 kilometers) east of the Lesser Antilles, moving west at 16 mph (26 kph).
Its maximum sustained winds were at 35 mph (56 kph).
Little change in strength is expected over the next couple of days, and the depression is likely to weaken and lose tropical characteristics by Thursday.
