Arthur expected to become a hurricane, temps climb to mid-90s on Mississippi coast

PASCAGOULA, Mississippi (AP) — Today will be hot with high temps hitting 95 in Pascagoula and a weak frontal boundary will bring the chance of afternoon showers back in the forecast, according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Arthur continues to churn off the coast of Florida and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane in the next 48 hours. A hurricane watch and tropical storm watch has been issued for the North Carolina and South Carolina coasts as Arthur has started a slow track to the north.

Maximum sustained winds are 60 mph with higher gusts and the forecast shows sustained wind speeds reaching 85 mph by Thursday.

On the Mississippi coast, there is a 20 percent chance of a pop-up afternoon shower, increasing to 30 percent on Thursday.

The Fourth of July is looking like it will be partly sunny and hot for the holiday, with no rain in the forecast for the evening firework shows.
