JACKSON – A new kidney dialysis unit has been unveiled at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF) in Pearl.
After months of renovation, the Hemodialysis unit, which was once located in a trailer at the prison, has been moved to a more medically conducive environment at the facility. Wexford Health Sources Inc., the contracted health care provider for Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC), operates the unit.
The unit increased from 12 to 14 dialysis machines and added a separate room containing two dialysis units to accommodate female inmates. The unit also operates with a new reverse osmosis (water) system. Currently, the facility has 24 dialysis patients. Wexford Health Sources, Inc. spent in excess of $260,000 on the improvements.
MDOC Commissioner Chris Epps said, “It is the goal of MDOC for all inmates to receive timely, quality, consistent health care as defined by MDOC in conjunction with our contracted healthcare vendor, Wexford Health Sources, Inc. in keeping with American Correctional Association and National Commission on Correctional Health Care guidelines.” Epps continued, “The new dialysis unit will provide much needed critical, medical care to incarcerated patients who need it and it will be done in the most effective and efficient way. The facility staff both from health care and security are to be commended for all their work in preparing for and carrying out this transition. The entire process was smooth and flawless.”
