A 38-year-old man is dead after authorities said he was shot while standing outside a residence Friday night. Morton Police said Marvin R. Thomas was shot once in the leg while talking to two men outside a home on Ratliff Street just after 6 p.m.

Morton Police Chief Nicky Crapps said Thomas ran back in the house and told those inside he’d been shot. He was transported to the emergency room at Scott Regional Hospital where he later died.

Authorities said it appears the bullet hit a main artery in Thomas’ leg. His remains were sent to the state’s crime lab in Jackson for an autopsy.

The incident remains under investigation.

Aberdeen man dead after hitting a tree

An Aberdeen man has died after a single-vehicle accident Saturday night on Highway 25. Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley says Christopher C. Payne, 30, was driving on Highway 25 toward Aberdeen when he ran off the road and hit a tree near the Muldon community, WTVA reported.

Gurley said it happened at 7:38 p.m.

The coroner said medics pronounced Payne dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Gurley said the cause of death is multiple trauma from the accident.

Payne was on his way home from work at Severstal, Gurley added.

The accident remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Man charged with dog fighting after traffic stop

A traffic stop in Gautier has ended with a man charged with several counts of dog fighting.

Officials with the South Mississippi Metro Enforcement Team said Joseph Bates of Georgia was pulled over Thursday on Interstate 10.

Investigators say Bates had pit bulls and other breeds of dogs in cages in his truck bed. Some of the dogs had wounds and one was severely injured with bite wounds on its face, neck and legs.

Bates was charged with 7 counts of dog fighting and 9 counts of animal cruelty. Additionally, he was charged with 9 counts of failure to provide rabies shot records.

The dogs were taken to the Jackson County Animal Shelter, and Bates was taken to the Jackson County Adult Detention Center.

Washington supervisors ban portable heaters

Washington County employees will have to bundle up this winter when a ban on portable heaters in county buildings goes into effect.

The Delta Democrat-Times reports that the county Board of Supervisors voted this past week to ban portable heaters from all county-owned buildings.

Clinton Police investigate two car accident

Clinton Police are investigating a two vehicle accident Saturday night. The head-on collision occurred around 8 p.m. at the intersection of Northside Drive and Tanglewood Drive in front of the Andy's Sit Go gas station in Clinton.

The vehicles involved were a mini-van and an SUV, WLBT reported.

Clinton Fire Department and Clinton Police responded to the scene.
