VICKSBURG – A now 17-year-old Vicksburg teen has been denied bond in the shooting death of her stepmother three years ago.

Circuit Judge Isadore Patrick said Friday that Tyla Denise Vega would remain behind bars even after attorney Marshal Sanders said the court ordered mental evaluation on the teen had been completed.

Vega has remained in custody at the Warren County jail since December 2011 when her $75,000 bail was revoked by her bonding agent.

Vega has been charged with the murder of her 32-year-old step mother, Alicia Michelle Vega. On May 2, 2011, Alicia was found on the floor of her mobile home in the 100 block of Jones Road in Warren County.

Authorities said Alicia’s teenage son was returning home from school around 3 p.m. when he found his mother’s body in the kitchen.

Alicia had been shot once in the head.

Lt. Randy Lewis, of the Warren County Sheriff’s Department, also said that Alicia’s vehicle, a tan 2002 Dodge Durango, was missing from the residence and that her stepdaughter was reportedly seen by witnesses leaving the scene in the car.

An intense search for Vega began and the Durango was eventually found abandoned.

After being on the run for about six days, a then 14-year-old Vega was found at a friend’s house in Greenville by the Warren County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Marshals.

No motive has been released in the killing.
