Victim claims he was beaten by black men
Police are investigating claims that a man was assaulted in Senatobia, apparently in retaliation for the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial.
Police Chief Steve Holts says a man called police about 11 p.m. Sunday, saying he has out jogging when forced into a car and beaten after an assailant asked if he knew who Trayvon Martin was.
The victim – whom police aren’t naming – is white. He says his assailants were black. The victim says he was dropped off on a road about three miles north of Senatobia in rural Tate County.
The victim suffered what Holts described as “non-life-threatening injuries” and was treated at a hospital and released.
Police are investigating and declined to say if they have suspects.
Senatobia is about 40 miles south of Memphis.
Ala. man faces sentencing for bank robberies
An Alabama man was to be sentenced this week for the robberies of two north Mississippi banks.
Brian Perry Jones of Toney, Ala., pleaded guilty in April to robbing Renasant banks in Iuka and Tupelo in 2012. He faces up to 40 years in federal prison.
Sentencing is set for U.S. District Court in Oxford.
In exchange for his guilty pleas, prosecutors agreed to drop two other counts of bank robbery.
Judge cancels sentencing in doc shopping case
A federal judge has cancelled the July 15 sentencing for former narcotics agent Searn Lynch, who has pleaded guilty to lying to obtain prescriptions for pain medication.
A notice on the website of U.S. District Court in Oxford said the hearing was cancelled. It says the hearing is postponed until further notice due to a scheduling conflict.
Lynch was fired from the Oxford Police Department after being charged with “doctor shopping” for prescription pain medicine. Court records show he was arrested on charges alleging that he got prescriptions from at least 17 doctors.
He pleaded guilty in April to one count of obtaining prescription drugs by deception.
His sentence can carry a maximum of four years in prison.
Harrison County inmate captured in Kiln
An inmate who left the Harrison County Work Center in Gulfport last Wednesday is back in custody.
The Sun Herald reports 38-year-old Robert X. Lumpkin was captured Sunday at 12:10 p.m. in Kiln by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities said a concerned citizen called in a tip and they found Lumpkin walking down a street. He was taken into custody without incident.
Lumpkin is serving a 12-and-a-half-year sentence for a conviction of burglary from Pearl River County. Officials say he will be taken to Central Mississippi Correctional Facility and may receive an additional five-year sentence if convicted of escape.
