Victim was 24-years-old

A one car accident has claimed the life of a Simpson County woman.

Jefferson Davis County Deputy Coroner Kathy Stephens says the accident happened on Granby Road around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. That’s off Highways 84 and 35 near Prentiss.

The 24-year-old was driving a Ford Taurus when she lost control, left the roadway and hit a tree.

Her name has not been released. The Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.

Man found shot to death in Oxford

Lafayette County authorities say a homicide investigation is underway into the shooting death of a 24-year-old man.

County Investigator Jarrett Fondren says the body of Jonathan Malone was found Saturday in his car along a county road.

Fondren says Malone died of a gunshot wound.

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the murder with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

Man killed outside lounge; Sheriff wants it closed

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace says he’s ready to start the legal effort to shut down a bar where a man was gunned down.

The man killed in the earlier thus month was identified as 27-year-old Willie Swartz of the Vicksburg area.

Three people have been taken into custody in connection with the shooting, which happened in the gravel parking lot in front of a lounge on Warren County’s Lee Road.

Pace told The Vicksburg Post he plans to meet with the district attorney in hopes of getting a court order to close the Starlight Lounge.

Pace said deputies have been called to the bar 21 times since January 2012 for disturbances that include shots fired and fights.

Nurse charged with illegally obtaining drugs

A New Albany woman has been arrested on three counts of illegally acquiring or obtaining possession of a controlled substance.

Attorney General Jim Hood says in a news release that 28-year-old Jessica Gaines was indicted by a grand jury in Lafayette County in June.

Hood says Gaines worked as a registered nurse at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford when the incident happened on Sept. 10, 2012.

The indictment alleges Gaines used an off-duty nurse’s electronic medication dispensing machine log-in code to gain access to hydromorphone and morphine sulfate.

The hospital notified authorities after a review of the electronic dispensing system reports.
