Court appearance set for Sept. 19
Authorities have charged an Alcorn County preacher with sexual battery. The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department told WTVA that Timothy D. Nall, 57, has been charged based on a grand jury indictment.
Authorities said a report was filed against Nall in April 2013. They said Nall has been a preacher at Farmington Baptist Church.
Nall was released on a $15,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept, 19.
Construction to begin on new clinic in Smithville
Construction has begun on the new Access Family Health Services Smithville Medical Clinic.
WTVA-TV reported that work was scheduled to begin last week, but was pushed back due to rainy weather.
The project must be completed within a certain time period because of grant guidelines.
The new facility is expected to open sometime during February 2014.
The administrative office for the main site and satellite clinics will remain at its current location.
Former housing leader pleads guilty in bribe case
The former director of a nonprofit housing agency has agreed to plead guilty to charges against her and testify against an ex-state employee.
Linda Balducci of Shelby pleaded guilty last week before U.S. District Judge Michael Mills to one count of conspiracy to embezzle money.
Court papers show that Balducci also will testify against codefendant Connie Lewis, a former Mississippi Development Authority employee accused of accepting more than $250,000 in bribes to steer work to a Mound Bayou contractor.
The conspiracy charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Prosecutors alleged the contractor, Jimmy Stokes, kicked $90,000 back to Balducci when she ran Southeastern Development Opportunities, a group that received grants to build low-income housing in a number of Mississippi Delta towns.
Woman who dumped dogs turns herself in
Waveland police say a Picayune woman turned herself in on an animal-cruelty charge after learning officials had released a surveillance picture that allegedly showed her dumping a litter of puppies behind a business.
Officials say the woman’s name has not been released because of fear for her safety.
The Sun Herald reports a surveillance picture showed a woman get out of a blue car Monday behind a store on Mississippi 603.
Police say another picture showed an adult dog chasing after the car as the woman left.
The dog and seven puppies were discovered about 8:41 p.m.. Police say four of the puppies were dead. The remaining dogs were taken to an animal shelter.
Police officials say the woman was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty.
