CLINTON – A man who allegedly murdered an 89-year-old man and his ailing 86-year-old wife worked for them in the past and owed them money, police said.
Interim Clinton Police Chief Mike Warren told The Clarion-Ledger that 47-year-old Willie Williams owed money to Arthur and Maxine Hodge but hadn’t worked for them in the past year.
Stephanie Henderson, a niece of the couple, says her uncle had made small loans over time to Williams totaling $1,300.
“The last few contacts with Williams had been him asking for more money,” she said.
Henderson said her uncle had refused to loan Williams more money. Henderson said Hodge was willing to offer Williams work at $10 an hour, with $5 of the payment going toward the debt Williams owed.
Police originally said Williams might have mowed the couple’s lawn the day before they were killed. Family members reportedly said that was not correct.
Williams is being held without bond at the Hinds County jail. A hearing in the case is scheduled for 1 p.m. June 24.
Police said Williams confessed to the killings hours after the couple died of blunt force trauma to the head. Arthur Hodge also had fatal stab wounds, Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said.
Williams told police he got into an argument with a member of the couple around 10 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at their house regarding work he had done for them, Warren said.
Henderson said Maxine Hodge, 86 had Parkinson’s disease and dementia and was in the hospital the weekend prior to the couple’s deaths. Arthur Hodge, 89, was a retired electrician.
