Death under investigation
The Sheriff’s Office in Jackson County is reporting the death of a 3-year-old child in a swimming pool.
The Sun Herald reports the death is believed to be the result of an accidental drowning Saturday, May 25, in a pool in the Gulf Park Estates area in the St. Andrews community.
The child’s name was being withheld pending further investigation and notification of family members.
Teen dies In Copiah County accident
The Copiah County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal car accident. The crash happened on Six Mile Road Tuesday night.
Sheriff Harold Jones says the accident was reported shortly after 8 p.m. on May 14, WLBT reported. Maurice A. Bingham, 17, was killed in the wreck. Sheriff Jones says Bingham lived on Johnson Road in Crystal Springs.
Sheriff Jones adds it was a single vehicle accident. A reason for the crash has not yet been released.
Starkville gets new fire truck
The Starkville Fire Department has a new fire fighting vehicle. City officials unveiled the new 75-foot ladder truck Wednesday, WTVA reported.
Officials say the truck is the most technically advanced vehicle built by Pierce.
Fire officials say the truck will need to be outfitted before firefighters train with it.
City leaders expect to have it in operation in two to three weeks.
Forrest Co. launching $5M local road project
Forrest County will get started this summer on a $5 million to repave about 65 miles of potholes and pitted roads.
The county will spend $3 million of its own money to pave about 40 miles.
Another $2 million from the State Aid Road Fund will resurface 25 miles of roads.
The Hattiesburg American reports that the roads getting a new overlay are more heavily traveled and many are used by commuters.
Fifty-three county roads will get a new overlay. In addition to the miles of fresh asphalt, 12 county bridges are being replaced, along with five receiving routine maintenance like sandblasting and painting.
Board of Supervisors President David Hogan says the county has saved for more than four years for the project.
Slain guard’s family sues over prison riot
The family of a guard killed during a prison riot in Mississippi has filed a federal lawsuit that says inadequate staffing and poor treatment created a dangerous environment.
Correction officer Catlin Carithers was beaten to death during the May 20, 2012, riot at the privately run Adams County Correctional Facility in Natchez.
The lawsuit was filed Wednesday, May 8 in U.S. District Court in Natchez against Nashville, Tenn.- based Corrections Corporation of America, which runs the prison.
The lawsuit says officials didn’t warn Carithers that he was on an inmate “hit list” and created a dangerous atmosphere “by depriving inmates of basic needs and treating them inhumanely.”
The prison holds nearly 2,500 inmates convicted of crimes while being in the U.S. illegally.
