Nineteen-year-old Kevin Monzon of Crystal Springs was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Ben Williams of the highway patrol. Monzon was reportedly driving on U.S. Highway 82 just east of Itta Bena around 8 p.m. April 25, when he ran off the roadway and rolled over.

A second passenger, Marcus Thompson, a junior from Houston, Texas was air-lifted to University Medical Center (UMC) in Jackson.

Passengers Rogers (Kevin) James, a junior from Evans, Ga. and Joseph Hardnett a sophomore from Chicago, Ill. were transported to the Greenwood-Leflore Hospital with minor injuries.

Monzon, a sophomore, walked onto the team in 2012 and took over the bulk of the placekicking duties by the second game of the season, the Associated Press reported.

“The MVSU community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Monzon following this tragic accident,” school officials said in a press release. “We express our deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences to all of his family and friends. The Valley community will continue to pray for all of those involved in this untimely accident.”

Counselors will be available through the University’s Counseling Center for those members of the Valley family who need support during this very difficult time, MVSU said.

According to his Facebook page, Monzon is originally from San Jose, California where his mother and family still live.

He also posted that he was engaged.
