King to perform in Tunica this weekend

The B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Indianola said the annual homecoming festival in honor of their namesake and the legendary bluesman, B.B. King, is scheduled for July 3.

King, a Mississippi native, will be performing on Saturday, April 27, at a casino in Tunica.

King, 87, was born in Berclair, and lived in Kilmichael before he moved to Indianola.

The museum, located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, is a living testimony to King’s influence in the music industry and is used for educational and recreational functions.

DeSoto board approves extra pay for teacher

DeSoto County teachers will receive an extra $750 in each of the next two school years.

The Commercial Appeal reports that the school board took the action after Superintendent Milton Kuykendall told it Monday that a plan to refinance of bonds issued in 2005 and 2006 will save the district $1.2 million.

He says that will allow the district to reduce the debt service and put that money back into operations.

School district spokeswoman Katherine Nelson says the raise will apply to all certified teachers in the 41-school district. Starting salary for teachers is about $32,000.

The refinancing plan is expected to be considered by board members at the next meeting May 6.

A 48-hour stay in jail could end up being a lot longer for a 29-year-old Baldwyn man.

Prentiss County Sheriff Randy Tolar tells WCBI that Artavius Richey is charged with two counts of trying to smuggle drugs and other contraband into the county jail.

Tolar says Richey showed up Friday to serve a 48-hour weekend jail sentence. But as he was being booked in, jailers discovered the drugs he’d allegedly tried to hide on his person.

His bond is set at $7,500.
