Victim was coming out of private drive

A Starkville man was killed Saturday morning after colliding with another vehicle on Highway 45 Alternate.

Walter Sykes, 77, was attempting to enter the northbound lane from a private drive when he was hit by a 2009 Toyota 4-Runner driven by 26-year-old Meredith McClure, WTVA reported.

The impact caused Sykes’ vehicle to overturn throwing him from his 2002 Ford Ranger truck. Sykes was not wearing a seatbelt.

A passenger in Sykes’ vehicle was transported to Baptist Memorial in Columbus with non-life-threatening injuries, WTVA said.

McClure was not injured. The accident remains under investigation.

Former bank teller pleads to identity theft

Kelly Taplin, 31, of Byram, has pleaded guilty in federal court to aggravated identity theft.

She will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge  Henry T. Wingate on July 11 at 9:30 a.m. She faces a mandatory penalty of two years in prison and a maximum possible

fine of $250,000.

Taplin admitted that, while working as a teller at Trustmark National Bank in Byram, she used the name, social security number, and date of birth of a Trustmark customer to obtain a $2,550 loan in that customer’s name without the customer’s knowledge or consent. She then used the loan proceeds for her personal benefit.

Wal-Mart donates $1.6M to promote fire safety

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. says it will donate $1.6 million to toward health and safety education in Bangladesh, three months after a fire swept through a factory there, killing 112.

The fire raised questions about safety in Bangladesh’s garment industry, which exports clothes to leading Western retailers. Wal-Mart-brand clothing was found in the factory, but the world’s biggest retailer said the factory wasn’t authorized to make its clothes.

Wal-Mart said that it will donate $1.6 million to U.S. nonprofit the Institute for Sustainable Communities to establish the Environmental, Health and Safety Academy in Bangladesh that will offer training on fire and workplace safety.

Wal-Mart, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, ranks second behind Swedish fast-fashion retailer H&M in the number of clothing orders it places in Bangladesh.

1 hospitalized in north Jackson apartment shooting

Jackson police are investigating the shooting of a local man at an apartment complex in Jackson.

Officer Colendula Green said they received the emergency call around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, March 27.

The shooting happened at in the 300 block of Northside Drive. Where, according to Green, an unidentified man was shot once in the chest.

So far, police do not have a suspect or a motive in the case. The victim’s condition was not immediately known.
