CORINTH – A 25-year-old Corinth man is being held on a $350,000 bond after authorities said he allegedly shot his girlfriend in the face after they broke up. Demarlen O’Bryan Davis is being charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and homicide in the death of 22-year-old Karson Stewart.

Captain Ralph Dance, an investigator with the Corinth Police Department, said Davis was taken into custody shortly after the incident on March 26.

Dance said several 911 calls brought police to an unoccupied residence in the 600 block of Martin Luther King Drive.

“They had backed up in the driveway,” Dance said. “And we believe he was sitting in the passenger seat at the time of the shooting. And when we got there, he was out standing on the driver’s side of the vehicle.”

Dance said it appears their relationship ended earlier that day and Stewart had picked Davis up in her car about 15 minutes prior to the shooting.

“We don’t know what set him off or why he shot her,” Dance said. “But we believe it’s a domestic situation. Witnesses said earlier in the day, Davis had threatened to kill Stewart and that he had a gun.”

Dance said Stewart was shot with a small caliber handgun. Detectives found a .32 near the murder scene.

“He disposed of it,” Dance said. “But we were able to find it.”

Dance said Davis lived in the 1300 block of Dickey Street, but had been living “off and on” with Stewart at her home on Sawyer Road. Dance said the murder took place about two to three miles from Stewart’s residence.

Dance said Davis fled the scene after he allegedly shot Stewart and when he returned he reportedly called 911 himself. He was taken into police custody without incident.

Dance said emergency responders also arrived on the scene.

“They worked on [Stewart] and attempted to revive her,” he said. “But she was pronounced dead at the hospital.”

Dance said neither Davis or Stewart had any outstanding warrants or charges against them. But Davis has served time with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Davis is being held in an Alcorn County jail and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week.
