MDCC names Dr. Larry Nabors as next president

MOORHEAD – The Mississippi Delta Community College Board of Trustees announced that Dr. Larry Nabors, Executive Vice President at Northeast Mississippi Community College, has been named President of the College.

Nabors will replace interim president Dr. Lynda Steele who has held the position since June 1, 2012 following the retirement of Dr. Larry Bailey.

In announcing the appointment of Nabors, Paula Sykes, Chair of the Mississippi Delta Community College Board of Trustees stated, “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are very proud to announce the naming of Dr. Larry Nabors as the 8th President of Mississippi Delta Community College.”

Mississippi Delta Community College said they are very fortunate to secure Nabors as their president.

“He is a man with a wealth of experience and many accomplishments,” Sykes said. “Dr. Nabors has a long standing record of excellence in leadership in the community college system and our college will benefit greatly from his wisdom and direction for many years to come.

Under Dr. Nabors leadership MDCC will grow and flourish. We look forward to the excellence that we will all enjoy under his leadership.”

The appointment concludes a search launched in the summer of 2012, led by a search committee composed of members of the Board of Trustees. The search committee enlisted the assistance of educational consultants Dr. Butch Caston and Dr. Willis Lott. The consultants provided advice and consultation to the Board of Trustees' search committee.

Nabors earned an Associate of Arts Degree from Northeast Mississippi Community College. Nabors also holds a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics, a Master of Science in mathematics, a Specialist Degree in educational leadership, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, all from the University of Mississippi.

Nabors returned to Northeast Mississippi Community College in 1988 where he taught courses in algebra, statistics, and calculus until being promoted to the Dean of Instruction in 2003.

After serving five years as the Dean of Instruction, Nabors advanced to the position of Executive Vice President. As Executive VP, Nabors is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the college and supervises the divisions of instruction, student services, facilities and maintenance, workforce training and economic development, public information, computer services, and planning and research.

Nabors' professional activities and affiliations are extensive.

Most recently, he served as the President of the Mississippi Community and Junior College Academic Officers Association (2010). Nabors is a member of Enrichment, Inc., which is a local educational support group within the community. He has held various leadership positions in the organization as Past Chairman of the Board and Past Chairman of several committees.

Married to the former Nedra Nance for 34 years, they have three children: Loren, Jennifer, and Jonathan. As a member of the Ripley First United Methodist Church, Nabors has held various leadership and educational roles within the church.

Nabors will take the reins of Mississippi Delta on Feb. 1, 2013. He will serve as the eighth president of the college, which is now in its 86th year of operation.
