WAVELAND – City officials in Waveland have settled two federal lawsuits over the use of stun guns by police officers.
The Sea Coast Echo reports that court records show plaintiffs Calvin “C.W.'' Parker and Evan Coote each reached out-of-court settlements this past week in separate cases.
Officials say the settlements are confidential and both lawsuits have been dismissed.
City Attorney Gary Yarborough says the litigation and settlement were handled through the city's insurance carrier.
Settlement agreements are not an admission of guilt, he said.
The Parker case was one of the first public complaints of alleged excessive use of a stun gun by police.
Parker was pulled over by officers on Sept. 2, 2008. Parker and the officer apparently got into an argument and Parker was stunned several times after he had already been handcuffed, according to testimony in Waveland Municipal court in 2008.
Coote was stopped on suspicion of DUI in March 2008, according to his lawsuit. Coote claims he was stunned “two or three times'' by three officers after he was handcuffed because he “was being loud.”
