Gulfport FB coach hospitalized after game

Mike Justice

GULFPORT – (AP) The football coach at Gulfport High School was hospitalized after a heart attack that may have started during a game. Mike Justice remained hospitalized Sunday at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.

Justice complained of chest pains at halftime Friday, when Gulfport led Oak Grove 14-13, and went to the emergency room early Saturday, assistant athletic director Donny Fuller told The Sun Herald.

The Admirals (1-3) lost 25-20.

Fuller said doctors put in two stents at 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Stents are used to keep arteries open.

Justice was in intensive care Saturday and expected to remain hospitalized for the next few days, Fuller said. Justice was in a regular hospital room Sunday, the hospital said.

Officials don’t yet know whether Justice will coach the Admirals on Friday at St. Martin, Fuller said.

Justice has been a coach for 33 years and is in his fourth year as coach at Gulfport, where his son Ben is linebackers coach, WLOX-TV reported.

He also is Gulfport High School’s athletic director.

Gulfport beat Moss Point 50-13 in its second game this season but lost 23-0, 34-6, and 25-20 to Pascagoula, South Panola and Oak Grove.
