Nutrition fairs set for Vicksburg and Jackson

Free health fairs complete with screenings, cooking tips and exercise demonstrations will be held in Vicksburg and Jackson next week.

JACKSON – (AP) Health screenings, cooking tips and exercise demonstrations are being offered this month at nutrition fairs in Vicksburg and Jackson.

The free events are sponsored by the National Urban League and Tyson Foods as part of a yearlong project to alleviate hunger for about 19,000 Mississippians.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that from 2008 to 2010, 14.6 percent of U.S. households were “food insecure,” meaning people in those homes might sometimes go without food because of a lack of money or other resources. Mississippi had the highest rate, with 19.4 percent.

The nutrition fairs are set for Sept. 19 at the Vicksburg Convention Center and Sept. 20 at the Salvation Army Community Center on Beasley Road in Jackson. Each event is from 3 to 6 p.m.
