Jones County sheriff: Gunman, daughter dead after standoff

A WDAM report

HATTIESBURG – A Jones County hostage situation and standoff has resulted in the deaths of the gunman and his daughter, according to WDAM in Hattiesburg. A Jones County sheriff's deputy was also shot during the standoff and is hospitalized, according to the report.

The deputy was expected to recover, but his name is not being released.

The gunman in standoff has been identified as 62-year-old Neil Newcomb.

Jones County sheriff Alex Hodge told The Associated Press the gunman and his daughter died in the home after a nearly 14-hour standoff came to an end around 5:30 a.m. Monday.

Hodge said Newcomb's daughter, Michele Savell, was killed during the hostage situation.

Wounded were the man's son-in-law Timothy Savell and Newcomb's ex-wife Kathy Laterrade and an unidentified deputy sheriff.

Officials used an armored vehicle provided by the Mississippi Highway Patrol to set off flash grenades just before SWAT members moved into the residence.

Hodge says it is not clear if the gunman was killed by law enforcement or took his own life.

Deputies were able to negotiate the release of the man's two grandchildren about 6 p.m. Sunday.

The incident took place in the Shady Grove area of Jones County, near the intersection of Upper and Lower Hamilton Hill Road.
