Mississippi Board of Education elects new leaders

JACKSON – A former teacher, principal, and school superintendent can now add chairman of the Mississippi Board of Education to his long list of education experience. Dr. O. Wayne Gann, of Corinth was elected Friday by State Board members to lead the Mississippi Board of Education for the next year. Board members also chose River Hills Bank Chairman, Howell Gage as vice chairman.

“It’s an honor to be selected as Chairman of the Mississippi Board of Education and I look forward to working with the entire education community to improve the academic achievement of our students,” said Gann. “We will continue to focus on our lowest performing schools by providing the technical assistance needed to help them improve, while also providing opportunities to better our highest performing schools.”

Dr. Gann was appointed to the State Board in 2006 by then Lieutenant Governor Amy Tuck. He retired after serving 27 years as superintendent of Corinth Public Schools. He has worked as a teacher and principal in the Union County and New Albany public school systems. Dr. Gann attended Itawamba Community College and holds a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Mississippi.
