Missing George County man found alive in mud pit

Sonny Breland

LUCEDALE – (AP) – After three days the search for 83-year-old Chester C. “Sonny” Breland of George County ended after someone found him in his vehicle stuck in a mud pit on Pollock Ferry Road in Jackson County, according to the George County Sheriff's Department.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd and a deputy used a truck to pull Breland out of the mud around 8:30 Sunday night.

“He was dehydrated, but overall in good condition,” Byrd explained.

Breland was transported to Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula for treatment.

Before he was found Sunday night, Breland was last seen Friday at 5:30 a.m. He reportedly drove off in his 1989 brown, two-door, Cadillac Seville and was headed to Cumbest Bluff Quick Stop in south George County for coffee.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations issued a silver alert for Breland. It is an alert issued when an elderly person goes missing.

“We've issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for him, which means his information has been entered into a national law enforcement database,” Pierce said. “He is listed in NCIC (national crime information center) which goes from Florida to Arizona.”
