Body of missing Vancleave man found in river

VANCLEAVE – Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said the body of a 38-year-old man reported missing by his friends was found after a search Saturday afternoon.

Byrd said a friend of Gene Tanner’s went to check on him and called authorities when they discovered he never made it home.

Tanner reportedly left the Little River Marina in Escatawpa by boat shortly after 2:30 Saturday, July 14, headed back to his house boat, which was docked on the Poticaw Bayou in Vancleave.

When authorities searched the river, they recovered Tanner’s body about 6 p.m.

“We found his boat in the woods about one mile north on Middle River,” Byrd said. “He hit a log and it ejected him. We think alcohol might be involved, but the coroner will have to decide that.”

Autopsy results on Tanner are pending.
