Woman went in store and left infant in car

Jackson police say a woman left her 2-month-old baby in a car with the motor running as she went into a store at a gas station and the car was stolen with the baby inside.

The car, with the baby unharmed, was found 30 minutes later at an apartment complex.

It happened Thursday, July 12, shortly before 2 p.m. at a gas station on Jackson’s Northside Drive.

No arrests have been made and an investigation is continuing.

Man’s body found in Richland

Authorities in Richland have identified the body of a 48-year-old man found in a field earlier this month. Police Chief Russel James said the man is Jeffrey W. Roy of Richland.

Train, truck collide in Bay St. Louis, 2 injured

Two people have been hurt after their truck collided with an eastbound CSX train.

The accident happened shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of City Park Avenue and Toulme Street in Bay St. Louis.

Deputy Chief Christine Johnson told The Sun Herald that Kenneth and Deborah Kennedy, both 52, from Waveland, were apparently going over the track and possibly tried to back up to get off the tracks when the accident happened.

Fire Chief Pam San Fillippo says their injuries did not appear life-threatening. Firefighters were able to get both out of the truck without using mechanical assistance, she said.

Johnson said the couple was talking when they were transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.

There are no crossing arms or lights at that railroad crossing.

Reg Morken, 73, has lived near that crossing for 12 years and said Saturday’s accident is the third he’s seen there in the past year.

“I looked out and saw the tail end of this truck about 20 feet in the air and told my wife to call 911,” he said. “These people are very lucky.”

Morken would like to see CSX put warning signals at that crossing.

Ex-police officer to stand trial

A former Ecru police officer will stand trial Oct. 29 in Aberdeen on federal charges of taking money from people during traffic stops.

WTVA reports that 34-year-old Jody Mac Rock of Pontotoc was indicted in late May and faces up to two years in prison and $500,000 fine or both, if convicted.

Federal court documents say on two occasions Rock demanded money in lieu of writing a traffic citation.

The indictment states both persons were deprived of their constitutional right to be free of unreasonable search and seizure.

Rock has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
