Man dead after “pursuit, shots fired” on Highway 45

A WTVA Report

LEE COUNTY – An unidentified man has died after his involvement in a pursuit with law enforcement that ended on Highway 45, according to Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green.

Green said the individual was pronounced dead at 5:11 p.m. Sunday after being taken to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, WTVA reported.

His name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin, though Green said the man was 40 years old and from the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Trooper Casey Mayo said a pursuit took place on that stretch of highway and shots were fired during the pursuit.

Green said an autopsy Monday would confirm the exact cause of death.

Mayo said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is the lead agency in the case.

Traffic was significantly hindered on Highway 45 after the incident took place. Trooper Brian Mobley said the section of four-lanes near the Green Street exit was shut down for about two hours because it is now considered a crime scene.

No other information has been released at this time.
