Two injured in Columbus shooting

A WCBI Report

COLUMBUS – A day-long feud turned violent late Thursday night, leaving a Columbus man fighting for his life and another in jail, WCBI reported. Columbus police said 21-year-old Joel Jones is charged with aggravated assault for the shooting of 27-year-old Zachariah Johnson with a shotgun outside an Ash Street home shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday night.

Johnson was shot in the chest, head and arm with buckshot and was undergoing surgery at the University Medical Center in Jackson Friday afternoon.

A second person, Tamarcus Thomas was standing behind Johnson and was hit by a pellet, resulting in a second aggravated assault charge against Jones.

Another man, 18-year-old Taylor Conner was also charged but those charges have since been dropped.

Police said the two groups had been arguing all day when Jones showed up at the home with a gun. The weapon has not been recovered.

After the shooting, Jones, Conner and a juvenile fled the scene but witnesses told police who they were. The suspects were spotted by police leaving the home of one of Jones’ relatives in East Columbus.

Officers then followed them to Ward Road where they were taken into custody.
