JACKSON – (AP) Jackson State has hired Surina Dixon to lead the women’s basketball program.

Dixon has spent the past three years at Southwind High School in Memphis, where she had a 67-20 record. Before her time at Southwind, she was the head coach at NCAA Division II Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., from 2005 to 2007. She also spent four seasons as head coach at Division I Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The Rosedale, Miss., native was hired at Texas Southern in 2008, but fired three months later without coaching a game. She was awarded $730,000 in 2011 after winning a lawsuit against the school for gender discrimination.

Dixon takes over a Jackson State program that had an 11-17record last season.
