Man ran over 5-year-old getting off the school bus
The Mississippi Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of a man sentenced to 22 years for a hit-and-run that killed a child.
Dominic Gebben was convicted in 2010 in Jones County on manslaughter and felony fleeing charges.
Prosecutors say Gebben drove around a stopped school bus and ran over 5-year-old Nathan Key, killing him. The incident occurred near the child’s home in 2009.
The boy’s death prompted the Mississippi Legislature to pass “Nathan’s Law” in 2011.
The law requires motorists to stay at least 10 feet from a stopped school bus. Violators could be fined up to $750 for a first offense. On a second offense, violators face a fine and up to a year in prison.
Body found at old Jackson golf course identified
Questions continue to surround an unsolved double murder in west Jackson.
Two men were found shot execution-style last month in a field off Country Club Drive near Interstate 220.
Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart told WLBT she still has not made contact with any family members of a person identified only as a 51-year-old man.
The corner has identified one of the bodies as Frank Hollands, 62, of Jackson. One victim was shot in the top of the head, the other in the side of the head. Grisham-Stewart said the bodies of the black male victims were badly decomposed.
Investigators believe the bodies were dumped at that location.
Rankin Co. man killed in accident with 18-wheeler
An accident involving an 18-wheeler claimed the life of a Sandhill man Monday.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, a white 1996 Buick Regency driven by Kenneth Lipskomb, 72, was traveling west on Carter Creek Lane.
A red Peterbuilt semi driven by Jimmie Jones of Walnut Grove was traveling north on Highway 43 in Rankin County.
Lipskomb failed to yield the right of way and was struck in the driver side by the truck.
He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. Lipskomb was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time
Airport awarded $105,000 grant
The Richton-Perry County Airport received a $105,000 Airport Improvement Program grant to clear obstructing growth along the approach to its runway.
The Hattiesburg American reports the grant is among more than $4.1 million awarded to 16 Mississippi airports by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The grants represented a second round of AIP funding for Mississippi airports. Last month, the FAA awarded $9.75 million in grants to 22 state airports, including Hattiesburg and Lumberton.
