From The Mississippi Link Newswire

JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has received the award from Keep America Beautiful (KAB) “For exemplary contributions and support of Keep America Beautiful and its Great American Cleanup, the Nation’s Largest Community Improvement Program,” MDOT officials said.

MDOT has partnered with Keep Mississippi Beautiful (KMB) and coordinated a coastal cleanup over the last seven years as an effort to continue to cleanup across the coast after Hurricane Katrina. MDOT was one of four DOTs across the nation to receive this award.

Keep Mississippi Beautiful board members were in attendance at today’s meeting of the Mississippi Transportation Commission to present the award and recognize MDOT for outstanding organization and achievements in promoting litter prevention, recycling, community beautification and environmental stewardship.

“We are honored to receive recognition for giving back to our communities and grateful for our partnership with KMB,” said Central District Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall. “I’ve always said, if you build it they will come, but if you don’t keep it clean- they won’t stay long.”

MDOT recognizes the effects litter has on our state’s economy and environment, and is committed to making Mississippi cleaner by coordinating specific programs to eradicate litter.
