Jackson police are looking for suspects in the murder of a Jackson man found dead in the bedroom of his home late Saturday night. Officer Colendula Green said 37-year-old Andrew Gordon was found after 11:30 p.m, March 31.

The fatal shooting occurred at a town home on Northtown Drive off Old Canton Road. Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart said Gordon was shot once in the back and once in the shoulder, WLBT reported.

Gordon was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Green, no motive has been established and no suspects have been identified.

Sources told WLBT that others were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but investigators would not release any additional information about the homicide.

It is the 18th murder investigation of the year in the capital city.

23 facing various drug charges in Madison County

Twenty-three people have been charged with various drug charges in a roundup that began in the pre-dawn hours Friday.

Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker says the investigation by his office began last winter and ended with the arrests Friday. He said four of the group were charged with misdemeanors and would have court hearings sometime Friday. He said 19 others charged with felonies would be in justice court Monday.

Tucker says those arrested were in Madison, Yazoo, Rankin and Hinds counties. He says law enforcement agencies from those counties and the U.S. Marshals Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration arrested in the arrests.

Tucker says charges range from possession of marijuana and cocaine to possession of prescription drugs to possession of alcohol by minors.

Lumberton searching for new police chief

The city of Lumberton is searching for a permanent police chief after Dennis Hobson was fired by the Board of Aldermen.

At a special-called board meeting Tuesday, March 27, attended by three of the city’s five aldermen, Hobson was relieved of his duties by a 2-1 vote following an executive session to discuss a personnel meeting.

The Hattiesburg American reports Hobson, who had been on medical leave following March 21 surgery on his right knee, was not present at the meeting and said he was unaware that he been fired until someone from the city called to inform him.

Mayor Miriam said one of the infractions was the misuse of public property, but declined to say what that entailed.

Coahoma County gets $2 million grant

Congressman Bennie Thompson said two entities within the Second Congressional District have received grants totaling more than $3 million. The first grant was awarded by the United States Department of Health and Human Services to Coahoma Opportunities Inc. for their Head start projects.

The second grant, for $744,073, was awarded by the United States Department of Interior to the Historic Preservation Fund. The grants will enable Mississippi to preserve and protect historic sites without expending tax dollars.

The Historic Preservation Fund is supported by revenue from federal oil leases on the Outer Continental Shelf. The National Park Service administers the fund and uses the majority of appropriated funds to distribute matching grants to State and Tribal Historic Preservation Officers.

States officials use the grants to fund preservation projects, such as survey and inventory, National Register nominations, preservation education, architectural planning, historic structure reports, community preservation plans, and bricks-and-mortar repair to buildings.

Virginia man linked to 2 burglaries

Gulfport police have a Virginia man in custody and have charged him with two counts of residential burglary. Thirty-year-old Aaron Hernando Holder of Augusta County, Virginia is being held on a $200,000 bond for incidents that occurred on Aug. 6, 2011 and Sept. 5, 2011.

Police chief Alan Weatherford said the burglaries took place in the Orange Grove community of Gulfport and an investigation led police to Holder. Warrants were issued for his arrest and police learned he had left the state.

Weatherford said with the assistance of an anonymous tip and the U.S. Marshal’s, Holder was located in Virginia and extradited back to Gulfport. He appeared before Harrison County Judge Diane Ladner who set his bond at $100,000 for each burglary count.
