VICKSBURG – The mayor of Sunflower is free on a $50,000 bond for allegedly stealing designer purses from the department store where he worked. Michael Pembleton, Jr., was arrested Tuesday morning, March 13, after police were tipped off that he was taking merchandise from Dillard’s.

Vicksburg police said Pembleton was reportedly spotted putting boxes of designer purses valued at $7,000 in his vehicle. Authorities said it seems likely that Pembleton was going to sell the two boxes of Dooney and Bourke, Brahim and Michael Kors purses.

Pembleton, 25, who claims he was the youngest mayor elected in Mississippi at the age of 22, began working for Dillard’s in Vicksburg in November 2011.

Pembleton was arrested and charged with embezzlement and appeared in court on Wednesday, March 14, where his bond was set.
