Victim in stable condition at local hospital

Two Harrison County men are in custody after authorities said they allegedly stabbed a man during an altercation at a local saloon.

Lt. John Flowers, of the Ocean Springs Police Department, said 19-year-old Justin Edgerton of Biloxi and 20-year-old Richard Ackerman of Gulfport were each charged with aggravated assault stemming from an incident at Shep’s Fort Bayou Saloon in the 1400 block of Bienville Blvd. on Saturday.

When officers arrived, they found the male victim lying on the floor with a single stab wound. He was taken to a local hospital where he was said to be in stable condition.

Witnesses said Edgerton and Ackerman allegedly fought with the man before stabbing him and fleeing the scene in a green Chevy pickup truck.

Both suspects were apprehended a short time later and transported to the Ocean Springs jail. Bond for Edgerton and Ackerman was set at $75,000.

Man loses appeal in robbery case

The Mississippi Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal from a McComb man serving a life sentence for armed robbery and aggravated assault.

Kendrick Lamar Williams was convicted in an incident at a nightclub on Mississippi Highway 48 in McComb.

Prosecutors said Williams demanded money from Eddie Lewis on April 11, 2009, and shot at him outside Lewis’ bar, Club Tatyana.

A Pike County judge denied Williams’ post-conviction petition in 2010. The state Court of Appeals upheld the lower court last year.

Williams had complained, among other things, that his lawyer failed to challenge the prosecution’s use of testimony that Williams’ co-defendants had pleaded guilty and failed to object to a prosecutor’s remarks to the jury.

Starkville gets more beds at county jail

Oktibbeha County has agreed to provide an extra eight beds at the county jail for prisoners from Starkville.

The Starkville Daily News reported that the city previously had an agreement with Clay County to house 15 of its inmates.

The agreement with Oktibbeha County whittles that number to seven.

Police Chief David Lindley says the new spaces in the county jail will be designated for short-term prisoners, while the remaining spaces in Clay County will be for those serving substantial time.

Lindley says having eight beds guaranteed each night will save considerable time and money.

“(This) should cut our transport trips down considerably, and we don’t have to pull people in on overtime to cover short shifts while somebody is in transport,” he said. “If you look at a round trip to West Point, by the time you get over there, pick the prisoner up and get them back here, it’s about an hour or more off patrol. That usually causes the shift to be short, so it’s really been problematic.”

Oktibbeha County will charge Starkville $30 a night for each bed space while Clay County will charge $35 for each of its beds.
