Case closed in accidental death of Winona woman

WINONA – Sheriff Jerry “Bubba” Nix said the investigation is closed in the case of a local woman killed in a single-vehicle accident on Feb. 23. Brenda Kay Bingham (McCormick) was pronounced dead at the scene after Nix said she veered off the road and hit a culvert.

Nix said the accident occurred after 7 p.m. on Lower Milligan Springs Road in Montgomery County and it appeared Bingham was headed to Kilmichael.

“She went down the right hand side of the road and hit the culvert,” Nix said. “We really don’t know what happened. But we know she was alone and she wasn’t wearing a seat belt.”

Nix said Bingham’s car went about 100 yards before it hit the culvert.

Nix said one of his deputies happened upon the scene and found Bingham dead inside her Nissan Altima.

“She hadn’t been there that long,” Nix said, “because the car was still smoking.”

Nix said there were no skid marks on the pavement and an investigation did not determine the case of the accident.

“We just don’t know,” he said. “Nobody knows what happened but her and the good Lord.”

Funeral services for Bingham, an employee of the Winona Wal-Mart for 31 years, were held on Feb. 28.
