CAMP SHELBY – A mother, her son and two friends were killed Sunday morning when their car plowed into an oak tree near the north gate of Camp Shelby, authorities said.

About 6 a.m., Feb. 26, Retha McCullum, 46, of Bay Springs, was driving a Nissan Maxima northbound on Highway 49 when she reportedly swerved off the road and hit the tree. McCullum, her 24-year-old son, Shamus McCullum, and her two passengers, 51-year-old Kenneth Laster and Kia Sims, age unknown, were killed.

Forest County Deputy Coroner Jonathan Nobles said all four victims were thrown from the vehicle and were likely not wearing seatbelts. A fifth passenger, 64-year-old Nancy McCullum, Retha’s mother, was wearing a seatbelt and sustained serious injuries. She was not ejected from the vehicle.

Nobles said the group was returning home to Bay Springs from a trip to the Coast.

The cause of the deadly accident remains under investigation.
