LEAKESVILLE – Once again Greene County is faced with a county official being arrested and charged with financial wrongdoing. Former chancery clerk Latricia Cornelson was arrested on Feb. 14 and charged with seven counts of embezzlement for allegedly writing unauthorized checks to herself for duties not performed.
State auditor Stacey Pickering said Cornelson had been employed by Greene County since 1994 and the allegations against her occurred from January 2005 and November 2007.
The indictment said that Cornelson, on a number of occasions, wrote checks to herself for “unauthorized and unearned Board of Supervisor’s Meeting Attendance fees,” “unearned Court attendance fees,” unauthorized “clerk of the board fees,” “Receiving clerk fees” and “Youth Court attendance fees” to which she was not entitled.
Cornelson’s arrest comes after Greene County Supervisor Earnest Holder III, was convicted and sentenced last year to six years in jail for kick-backs involving Hurricane Katrina and five years after former Greene County Chancery Clerk William “Mel” Williams plead guilty to nine counts of embezzlement.
