JACKSON – Police officer Colendula Green said two men have been arrested and charged with allegedly beating and robbing a 62-year-old man while he worked. Twenty-five-year-old David Thomas and 29-year-old Jontez Garvis were arrested this weekend and charged with the aggravated assault and armed robbery of Fred Jackson.

Reportedly, Jackson, was wielding a gate at Tri-Mass Recycling on West Woodrow Wilson Avenue when he was attacked on Jan. 29.

Jackson police said surveillance video showed Jackson was kneeling down working when two unidentified men entered the salvage yard and struck him with a blunt force object.

Jackson was severely beaten sustaining several skull fractures and severe head trauma, his daughter, Sheila Hedrick said.

“His face is basically shattered,” she said.

Jackson remains in a coma and has been given a 10 percent chance of survival, his daughter said at a press conference.

Stolen from Jackson during the beating was his wallet containing $500 from a job he’d just completed and a payroll check he was planning to deposit that Monday.

A $13,500 reward was soon offered for any information leading to the arrests of the men responsible for the beating, which family members initially believed was more than just a robbery.

“[It’s] because of the way he was beaten so bad,” Hedrick she said. “And they took his cell phone so he couldn’t even try to get help. The way he got beaten, it looks like revenge.”

Green said detectives received information identifying both Thomas and Garvis. Garvis was arrested on Feb. 3 and Thomas on Feb. 4.

Both men were charged with armed robbery and aggravated assaulted. They are both being held without bond.
