New Hinds County Sheriff and others to be sworn in today

Sheriff Tyrone Lewis will take his oath

JACKSON – New and returning Hinds County officials will take the oath of office during a swearing ceremony scheduled for Thursday morning at 9 a.m., at the Hinds County Courthouse.

Senior Circuit Judge Tomie T. Green will preside over the ceremony.

The program will also include an introduction by Rev. Dr. Connie Shelton of the Galloway United Methodist Church in Jackson and a recognition of guests by the Honorable Judge Winston L. Kidd.

Judge Green will give the oath of office to newly elected Hinds County Supervisor Kenneth I. Stokes, District 5, and to incumbent members of the Board of Supervisors including Robert Graham, District 1; Douglas “Doug” Anderson, District 2; Peggy Hobson Calhoun, District 3; and Phil Fisher, District 4.

Judge Green also will administer the oath to Chancery Clerk Eddie Jean Carr, Circuit Clerk Barbara Dunn, newly appointed Public Defender Michele Purvis Harris and assistant public defenders, and to County Surveyor Paul A. Greene.

Circuit Judge Jeff Weill will give the oath of office to new Sheriff Tyrone Lewis. Lewis, who worked for the Jackson Police Department for nearly 30 years, defeated long-standing sheriff Malcolm McMillin.

Judge Weill also will swear in Justice Court Judges Don Palmer, District 1; Ivory E. Britton, District 2; Frank Sutton, District 3; and Jimmy Morton, District 4.

Circuit Judge Winston L. Kidd will administer the oath of office to County Attorney Sherri Flowers-Billups and staff, Tax Assessor Charles E. Stokes, Tax Collector Eddie Fair, and Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart.

Court of Appeals Judge Ermea “EJ” Russell will give the oath of office to District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith and assistants.

Justice Court Judge Clyde Chapman will give the oath of office to new District 5 Justice Court Judge Pearlie Brown Owens. Judge Chapman will swear in constables Jerry Moore, District 1; Lawrence Funchess, District 3; Jon Lewis, District 4; and Bennie C. Buckner, District 5. Judge Green administered the oath of office to District 2 Constable John Brown on Dec. 21.

The ceremony will take place in Courtroom 1 on the second floor of the courthouse.
