Graham seeks second term as Supervisor

As part of our month-long series with TV-23, “Your Voice Your Vote,” this week, we spotlight a Hinds County race that has garnered statewide media attention.

Robert Graham is seeking a second term as the Democratic Supervisor for District 1 in Hinds County. Graham cites as some of his major accomplishments in his first four years as Supervisor: installing new sirens in portions of the county; creating and implementing test upgrades and maintenance service for all sirens and implementing an awards recognition program for all county employees.

Graham, who has come under heavy scrutiny during the last two-months for what some consider as ‘double-dipping,’ describes the attacks as a political ‘witch-hunt.’

“I understand what is happening here and I’m prepared for it. When I was elected to office, I promised change and we have brought change,” Graham said. “I also understand that I may not be as popular for doing business with folk that live in my district and with folk that look like me.”

Graham told show host Bishop Ronnie Crudup that Republicans want [to take] his seat back at all costs. “They [Republican] are going to great lengths to take this seat back. It has become a collaborative effort to put a Republican back in District 1,” Graham said.

“But, I stand on my record of being able to work across party lines.”

District 1 is one of only two districts in Hinds County that sits entirely in the city of Jackson.

It [District 1] spans across northeast and north Jackson and has changed in demographics based on the most recent census. “I honestly believe that there is an anti-Jackson movement going on,” Graham said.

When pressed by Crudup to back that statement up, Graham responded, “I stand by that, there are those who want to see Jackson fail.”

Graham appears on ‘The Issues’ Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. The show airs on Jackson State University’s TV 23 or Comcast Cable Channel 14.
