Indiana man shot and killed grilling at Jackson hotel

JACKSON – Police are still looking for suspects and a motive in the murder of an Indiana man last week at a Jackson motel. Jackson Police Officer Colendula Green said around 5:50 p.m., on July 7, 29-year old Prentiss Gillett IV was found lying in the grass in an area adjacent to the Super 8 Motel at 2355 Highway 80.

Reportedly, Gillett was barbecuing in the parking lot when motel officials were notified that a man was lying on the ground.

Gillett had been shot three times.

“Officers responded to the scene in reference to an unknown trouble [call],” Green said. “Upon [their] arrival, they found the victim and he was suffering from gunshot wounds to the head.”

Green said emergency responders rendered aid to Gillett on the scene and he was later transported to UMC.

“He was eventually placed on life support,” Green said. “And on July 8 [he] succumbed to his wounds.”

FOX 40 News reported that Gillett, his stepfather and younger brother were in Jackson doing construction work with the Jackson Housing Authority. Reportedly, the stepfather was in the motel’s lobby paying the bill when Gillett was murdered.

Officer Green said they have no motive in the shooting and no suspects have been identified.
