Mississippi heat-related deaths now at 8

CLEVELAND – Bolivar County officials are waiting for confirmation, but they believe an elderly man found dead in his yard last week, may be the eighth person in the state to die due to the extreme heat. John T. Greer, 84, was pronounced dead at the scene after a passerby saw his body in the yard on Thursday, Aug. 5.

Police believe Greer, who lived alone, had been dead for at least a day.

Authorities said around 7 a.m., someone saw Greer from the gate of his home in the 100 block of East End Street in Cleveland, and called police.

When the police arrived, they found Greer lying near a tree in his yard surrounded by his cats. WABG reported there was also a jug of water found near the body.

Bolivar County Deputy Coroner Dorothy Scarborough pronounced Greer at the scene and said his death was likely heat-related.

There were no signs of physical abuse or trauma on the body.

Greer was sent to the state’s crime lab for an autopsy.

The same day, authorities in Washington County found an 87-year old man dead in his home and the coroner confirmed that his death was heat-related.

The man has not been identified, but officials said he was found by family members who went to his residence, in Hollandale, to check on him.

Authorities said there was no air conditioner in the home.

An autopsy is also pending in this case.
