Parents get $4.7 million for pool incident

The Associated Press is reporting that the parents of two children who nearly drowned in the swimming pool at a Jackson hotel three years ago have been awarded a multi-million dollar settlement.

On July 30, 2007, Robert Sproles, Jr., and his family were at the La Quinta Inn in Jackson. His children, ages 8 and 9, were left unattended at the hotel while their father took his wife to work.

Authorities said neither child knew how to swim and their parents had warned them to stay away from the pool.

The Sproles’ lawsuit alleged that a latching device on the pool gate wasn’t working and the hotel manager violated corporate policy by allowing his CPR certification to lapse.

The hotel manager quickly responded and helped to save the children’s lives.

The family was awarded $4.7 million.
