Local students attend national leadership forum, meet legislators

JACKSON – Two Jackson area students used their spring break

to attend the National Leadership Forum held in Washington, D.C. to receive training in a number of areas including:

  • Effective communication skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Effective mentoring
  • Self-Image/Self-Identity
  • Building a healthy relationship

Darius Davis, a junior from Jim Hill High School, and Daniel Powell, an eight-grader at The Veritas School, were provided with the tools they need in order to have asuccessful and healthy lifestyle while serving as student leaders.

They were among approximately 100 students from across the nation who attended the Leadership Forum.“The Leadership Forum helped me realize how important my future is and that I need to be careful of the decisions I make. It also helped us work on our listening and speaking skills,” Davis said.

During their visit, the students’ itinerary also included visits to meet members of the State Congressional Delegation. They visited the offices of Senator Thad Cochran, Senator Roger Wicker and Representative Greg Harper. Davis and Powell were given the opportunity to take a picture with Congressman Bennie Thompson. “I truly enjoyed this once in a lifetime experience. I was nervous about talking to the state representatives, but after speaking with them, I felt more comfortable. I realized I needed to face them with confidence. I will always remember this adventure,” said Powell.

Davis is currently participating in ROMI’s Students Taking A Radical Stand (STARS) abstinence-centered education program at Jim Hill, and Powell completed the 10 class session program that was held at his church’s summer camp in 2008.

“I believe this forum was very effective and I was pleased to hear the students speak so positively about their experiences,” said Larry McAdoo, Co-Founder of Redemption Outreach Ministries International, Inc. (ROMI) which sponsored the students’ participation in the Leadership Forum.
