Car crashed into front entrance

A 77-year old woman was killed after authorities said a car crashed into the dental office where she was sitting. Holly Springs police said Mary L. Betts, of Marshall County, was pronounced dead at the scene when an SUV crashed into the front entrance.

According to printed reports, the accident occurred at the office of Dr. John H. Jones at 135 E. Gholston Avenue.

The driver of the vehicle, Dorothy Johnston, 65, told investigators she was trying to turn around in the parking lot of the dental office when she hit the gas by mistake. She said she was trying to apply the brake.

Authorities investigating the scene confirmed that Johnston never applied the brakes before crashing into the building.

Reports also said another female patient was injured in the crash and she was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Betts, a retired bookkeeper, was taken to the Mississippi Crime Lab for an autopsy.

There were no charges filed against Johnston.

Residents want wider sidewalks

Tupelo City Council members have unanimously agreed to literally pave the way for more pedestrian friendly streets. City officials are working closely with the city planner to have wider sidewalks for residents to walk, and possibly bike routes.

For years Tupelo citizens have complained about the lack of wider sidewalks in some areas and Renee Ray, Tupelo’s City Planner, said there is only so much the city can do.

However, after last week’s meeting, officials have agreed to look into the matter from a financial and practical standpoint.
