Man owes $18,000 for two kids

A Tupelo man was given the option of paying child support or going to prison. Barrett Bishop, 36, was sentenced by Lee County Circuit Court Judge Jimmie Roberts for failure to pay his court ordered child support. Bishop owes $18,000 for his two children, the attorney general’s office said.

Roberts ordered Bishop to pay $2,000 and sentenced him to five years, suspended, in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Bishop was scolded by the judge in open court and said he had committed “a crime” against his children and that he was giving Bishop the chance to “do the right thing” and “pay what he owes and avoid jail time.”

Rosedale has new police chief

David James, Jr., has been sworn in as the new police chief in Rosedale in Bolivar County. Judge Gwendolyn Thomas swore James in at a program at Bolivar High School.

James, who prior to this appointment, worked for the district attorney’s office, also worked for the city of Shelby and is a military veteran.

Arrest made in cowbell incident

A Mississippi State University student has been charged with hitting another student with a cowbell after the Egg Bowl in November.

Brett Morgan Vowell, 23, of Columbus, turned himself in to police and his bond was set at $5,000.

The Associated Press reported that the incident occurred at the MSU stadium on Nov. 28, 2009 during the post-game celebration following the Bulldogs victory over Mississippi on Nov. 28, 2009. Authorities said the victim suffered a severe head wound after being struck in the head with a cowbell after an argument.

The victim was not identified and Vowell was charged with assault.
